Checkpoint Scheduled in Costa Mesa

Police in Costa Mesa are being proactive this week by setting up a DUI and driver's license checkpoint at Flower Street and Newport Ave.

From 7 p.m. onward officers will conduct field sobriety tests on those drivers that are believed to be under the influence. Local officials are trying to reduce their ranking of 20 on the "Top 50 DUI Cities in California" list issued in 2008 by the California Office of Traffic Safety. As a result of actions like these checkpoints overall traffic deaths fell between 2007 and 2009 by 23 percent. 

Director of the California Office of Traffic Safety, Christopher J. Murphy, issued a statement last week in which he urged drivers to call 911 when they observed possible drunken driving. He added that although the state was pleased with the reduced number of traffic fatalities "we can't let up on efforts to encourage and support traffic safety."
