Man Facing Lengthy Jail Time for Vehicular Manslaughter

One man now faces serious jail time for his role in a vehicular manslaughter case.

According to Lewiston police, 43-year-old Douglas A. Bruce was operating his motorcycle when he crashed into a pickup truck last Sunday. The accident injured Bruce but killed his passenger, 51-year-old Pauline A. VanThiel. He now faces multiple charges, including vehicular manslaughter, DWI and aggravated unlicensed operation.

Although VanThiel was flown to Erie County Medical Center by Mercy Flight, she died while being treated in the emergency room.  According to police Sgt. Frank Previte, Bruce was heading westbound on Upper Mountain Road when it crossed over the center line, striking the pickup truck. Both he and VanThiel were thrown from the motorcycle, causing just minor abrasions to Bruce.

The driver of the pickup driver was uninjured. No charges have been filed against him at this time.
