Palm Springs Police to Increase DUI Enforcement

In Palm Springs, it has been announced that police will widen their net to capture people who drive under the influence of drugs and alcohol.  The city said that it will hold DUI checkpoints at new locations on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.  The news was released by City Manager David Ready.

At this time, the police department is discussing adding more dates and locations and said it could roll out new checkpoints by the end of the year.  To date, DUI checkpoints in the area have occurred on Fridays once a month and have rotated among four locations.

The new strategy came into place after a Desert Sun investigation revealed Palm Springs is rated number one in California among cities of its size for DUI crashes.  From 2001 to 2008, DUI accidents have killed 32 people in the area.

The Palm Spring Police Department said that it has received $800,000 in state grants over the past 10 years to combat the problem and most of the money has been used for sobriety checkpoints.
