New Unit in Kern County to Focus on Felony DUI

A new unit has been created in Kern County to focus on felony drunken driving cases and homicides caused by drunken driving. The state Office of Traffic Safety has teamed up with the Kern County District Attorney's office to create this new unit. At this time two prosecutors along with supporting staff will be the main support team.

However, they will be working with police agencies across Kern County, organizations like Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and the Office of Traffic Safety. They hope to reduce the number of drunken drivers on the road by providing education and prosecuting those who have been brought in on DUI charges.

District Attorney Ed Jagels reports that "according to the best available information, Kern County now ranks in the top five counties in California in DUI fatalities." He has seen too many innocent deaths at the hands of drunk drivers and hopes to increase the efforts to cut down on these tragedies by adding enhanced prosecutions to the efforts of law enforcement.
